Quick facts
  • A Polish visa cannot be extended at a Ukrainian consulate: only Polish authorities handle that;
  • Since 2022, Ukraine’s consular network in Poland has expanded: a new Consulate General opened in Wrocław;
  • Poland now hosts 5 state missions: the embassy/consular section in Warsaw and Consulates General in Gdańsk, Kraków, Lublin, and Wrocław;
  • New consulates in Rzeszów and Poznań are planned.

Ukrainians coming to Poland for long-term residence or as tourists should know what the embassy and consulates can actually help with, and what needs to go through Polish authorities instead.

A Polish visa cannot be extended at the Ukrainian embassy or consulate: this is handled exclusively by Polish authorities.

What a consulate can’t help with

  • Issuing or extending Polish visas for Ukrainian citizens.
  • Issuing residence documents: permanent residence, a temporary residence card, or an EU long-term resident permit. These come from the provincial office (Urząd Wojewódzki).
  • Registering cars bought in Poland.
  • Employment contracts and employer notifications (oświadczenie): handled by the employer and the Labour Office (Powiatowy Urząd Pracy).
  • Verifying a company’s registration in Poland: you can check this yourself via the National Court Register (KRS), and for staffing agencies, via the KRAZ register.

What Ukrainian consulates actually handle

  • Passport matters: renewing or issuing a new international passport, adding information about children born in Poland, and issuing a return certificate if you’ve lost your travel document.
  • Consular registration: required if you permanently reside in Poland or plan to stay more than 3 months; important if you want to vote from abroad.
  • Citizenship matters: acquiring, restoring, or renouncing Ukrainian citizenship.
  • Requesting, certifying, and registering documents: marriage certificates, education documents, and registering births, deaths, divorces, or name changes.
  • Notarial acts: certifying contracts, wills, powers of attorney, and confirming copies and translations.

Note: outcomes often depend on your specific situation (type of residence status, the particular consulate). It’s worth confirming current requirements directly with your consulate before visiting.

Embassy of Ukraine in Warsaw

The diplomatic mission is located at al. Jana Chrystiana Szucha 7, 00-580 Warszawa (phone: +48 22 622 47 97). Correction to older guides: the embassy’s consular section is now at a different address: ul. Antoniego Malczewskiego 17, 02-617 Warszawa, phone +48 22 621 39 79 (it used to share the address with the embassy itself on Szucha street; that’s no longer the case).

The consular section serves residents of central Poland, including the Mazowieckie voivodeship.

In emergencies (lost documents, traffic accidents, threats to the life of Ukrainian citizens), assistance is also available outside office hours: check the embassy’s official website for current hotline numbers.
