You still can’t buy an anonymous SIM card in Poland. Mandatory subscriber registration has been in force since 2017 and hasn’t been repealed since. Here’s what data you’ll need, how to register a card in 2026, and what to do about children’s and business numbers.

Why SIM card registration exists

The requirement came from Poland’s anti-terrorism act and took effect on 1 February 2017. Since then, every SIM card in Poland, including prepaid (“telefon na kartę”) offers, must be registered to a specific person or company. The rule is still in force today: you cannot activate a new starter pack with any operator (Play, Orange, T-Mobile, Plus, or the virtual operators) without showing ID.

What data you need to register

When buying or activating a card, the operator will ask for:

  • your first and last name, verified against an ID document (passport or other travel document);
  • a PESEL number, if you have one; if not, your ID document number and series is enough;
  • your signature (on paper or electronic).

If the card is registered to a company, you’ll also need the REGON, NIP, or KRS number.

How to register a SIM card in 2026

Registration methods vary by operator, but usually include: in a shop (showing your ID); online via the operator’s website or app if your identity is already verified (e.g., through your online banking profile); and in some cases through a partner bank’s online banking channel, if the bank has already identified you.

The same rule applies to eSIM: a virtual number is registered exactly the same way as a physical card.

Registering a card for a child

A child aged 13 or older can register a SIM card themselves, provided they have an ID document. For children under 13, a parent or legal guardian must register the card on the child’s behalf.

Business SIM cards

If you’re registering a number for a company, for example after setting up a sole proprietorship (JDG), you’ll need to provide the company’s NIP/REGON details. This is a standard procedure unrelated to the business’s tax form.

If you plan to work as a B2B contractor through a JDG, keep the PIP 2026 reform in mind: from 8 July 2026, the Labor Inspectorate can reclassify such a contract as an employment relationship without a court ruling. More in our PIP 2026 series.

FAQ

Can I buy a SIM card without ID?
No, this has been prohibited by law since 2017 for all operators, including prepaid.

What happens if I don’t register my card?
The operator is required to deactivate an unregistered number, so you simply won’t be able to use it.

Do I need a PESEL to register?
No, if you don’t have one, your ID document details are sufficient.
