In short
  • Skrill (Paysafe Group) is still operating in Poland in 2026, including for receiving payments from foreign clients;
  • As of January 2026, bank withdrawal costs 1.75% (min. €3.50); currency conversion is 3.99%;
  • An account is considered inactive if there’s been no activity for 12 months (365 days): a €5/month maintenance fee then applies until the balance reaches zero;
  • For freelancers/sole traders (JDG) in Poland, Skrill is a handy add-on to a bank account, not a replacement for one.

Skrill is a popular e-wallet (especially among freelancers) that lets you transfer money between users via an email address. The company is part of the Paysafe group and remains active across the European market, including Poland, in 2026.

What is Skrill

Skrill is a British company operating since 2001; until September 2011 it was known as Moneybookers. Since 2019, Skrill has been part of the Paysafe payments group (the same group owns Neteller).

With this wallet, you can withdraw money received from clients to a bank account (via SEPA/SWIFT), to a Skrill Prepaid Mastercard, or to other Skrill users’ accounts.

Skrill remains a popular method among freelancers in the EU, in particular as a way to receive payment from foreign clients without opening a separate account in the client’s currency. Buying and selling a range of cryptocurrencies directly in the wallet is also available; this works for users in Poland too, though availability depends on current EU regulatory rules (MiCA).

How to create a Skrill wallet

You can create a Skrill account at account.skrill.com/signup by filling in the required details (you can switch the interface language if needed).

Note: when entering your name, make sure it matches the details you use with your bank, to avoid issues when withdrawing funds. You’ll receive a confirmation email after registration.

You can top up your account via bank transfer, local payment methods (e.g. Blik/Przelewy24 for Polish users), or a linked VISA/Mastercard/American Express card. To withdraw funds to a bank account, you’ll need to provide a detailed Polish residential address and complete identity verification (KYC), required under EU anti-money-laundering rules.

Skrill fees in 2026

Current fees (verified via WebSearch, January-April 2026):

  • topping up the wallet: free for SEPA transfers within the EEA; local methods and cards are usually 1-2.5%;
  • withdrawing to a bank account: 1.75% (min. €3.50), aligned with Neteller’s pricing as of January 2026;
  • receiving money from other Skrill users: free, if no currency conversion is required;
  • currency conversion fee: 3.99% (unchanged since 2019);
  • as of April 1, 2026, the Skrill Prepaid Mastercard has new fees: 0.50% (min. €1) for money received directly to the card, and a minimum €1 fee for ATM withdrawals;
  • inactive account maintenance fee: €5/month if there’s been no activity for 12 months (365 days) in a row, deducted from the balance until it reaches zero, never creating a negative balance.

Different sections of the Skrill website state different inactivity periods (6 or 12 months), so before applying, check the current Terms of Use directly on skrill.com.

Skrill vs a Polish bank account

For freelancers and sole traders (JDG) in Poland, Skrill is a convenient way to quickly receive payment from a client abroad, but it does not replace a Polish bank account: you’ll still need a Polish bank account for official settlements with counterparties, issuing invoices, and paying taxes/ZUS contributions.

If you work on a B2B contract as a freelancer, keep in mind: the payment method (Skrill, PayPal, bank transfer) has no bearing on the legal status of your contract: the risk of a B2B contract being reclassified as an employment relationship under the PIP 2026 reform depends on the actual nature of the cooperation with the client, not the payment tool used. More on the reform in our complete guide to PIP 2026 for B2B contractors.
