In Poland, transfers move from account to account, not card to card as in some other countries. Here’s how the ELIXIR system works in 2026, what changed with the rise of instant Express ELIXIR transfers, how long a regular transfer between two different banks actually takes, and what to know about euro transfers.

Quick summary: standard ELIXIR transfers process on a session schedule during business days and are free; instant Express ELIXIR transfers now run 24/7/365, including weekends and holidays, with a per-transaction cap of 100,000 PLN and fees set individually by each bank rather than by the operator, KIR; every bank runs its own session schedule, usually 3 a day; Bank Zachodni WBK has been fully rebranded as Santander Bank Polska.

Bank account vs. bank card

We’ve already covered opening a bank account in Poland. Here we’ll dig into the details of sending and receiving money, and how transfers between bank accounts actually work.

Note that unlike Ukraine, Russia, Belarus, and several other countries where card-to-card transfers are the norm, in Poland all transfers happen between bank accounts. A card is just a tool for managing the money in your account, alongside ApplePay, GooglePay, or BLIK.

So whether you’re paying a business, a government office (e.g., a stamp duty for issuing a document), or just a friend, you’ll use a 26-digit account number, which in Poland typically looks like this: 60 1030 1508 0000 0005 5001 0038.

Internal transfers

If a transfer happens between two accounts at the same Polish bank, it usually arrives almost instantly, in real time. If the banks are different, an ordinary transfer takes anywhere from a few hours to one business day, unless you use an instant transfer (see below).

How the ELIXIR system works in 2026

Settlements between Polish banks run through a single system called ELIXIR, operated by KIR (Krajowa Izba Rozliczeniowa), Poland’s National Clearing House. Standard ELIXIR transfers are processed in several sessions throughout the business day (KIR publishes the current session schedule) and remain free for customers at most banks.

Standard ELIXIR transfers are only processed on business days. If you need to send or receive money on a weekend or holiday, you need an instant transfer instead.

Express ELIXIR and instant transfers

The biggest update since this article was first written: instant Express ELIXIR transfers are now available around the clock, 24/7/365, including public holidays. The per-transaction limit is 100,000 PLN, and a transfer is typically completed within seconds. KIR itself doesn’t fix a single price for this service: each bank sets its own fee. Some banks include instant transfers for free in certain account packages, others charge a separate fee. Check the terms with your own bank.

ELIXIR session times by bank

Every bank runs its own session schedule; there’s no single timetable shared by all banks, KIR only synchronizes the exchange of batches between them. Below are approximate times for the largest banks, based on data from September 2026 (compiled from each bank’s own official page). Schedules can change, and the actual crediting time also depends on the recipient’s own bank’s schedule, so always check the current timetable in your bank’s app or its fee schedule (Table of Fees and Commissions).

Other banks (Alior Bank, BNP Paribas, Credit Agricole, VeloBank, and others) run a similar three-session schedule: typically a morning, a midday, and an afternoon session, with the last outgoing session closing somewhere between 2 PM and 4 PM. The easiest way to check your own bank’s exact hours is its mobile app, which usually also shows whether a given transfer will still make the current session.

A worked ELIXIR example

Sending money:
You send a standard (non-instant) transfer from your personal account at Bank Millennium to an account at Bank Pekao at 9:00 AM. The money will only leave your account during Millennium’s next outgoing session, say at 12:10 PM, regardless of whether you initiated the payment at 9:00 AM or 4:00 AM.

Receiving money:
If Pekao’s next incoming session is after 3:30 PM, the funds won’t arrive in the second account before that time.

Transfers via SEPA

The ELIXIR system handles PLN-denominated settlements. If you need to transfer money in euros, the SEPA system applies, allowing transfers from a Polish bank to a European one, or between two Polish banks, provided the transfer is in euros. SEPA settlement is used by banks in EU member states, EFTA countries (Norway, Switzerland, Iceland, Liechtenstein), and countries with bilateral agreements with the EU (Andorra, Monaco, San Marino, Vatican). Waiting times and costs are typically much lower than for a SWIFT transfer: check your bank’s fee schedule for exact pricing.

If you run a business under a JDG/B2B contract: how promptly and transparently you get paid is one of the factors labor inspectors look at when assessing reclassification risk under the PIP 2026 reform. Regular, fixed transfers that look like a monthly salary can be one sign of a disguised employment relationship. If you’re unsure how this applies to your own contract, that’s exactly what MojaFirma’s legal team handles.
